For a standalone kitchen sink replacement in Central NJ, choose the new sink around the existing cabinet and countertop opening. Bowl depth and drain position also affect whether the plumbing can reconnect within the space below. Measuring these details before ordering helps keep the project focused on the sink and its connections.

Sink and cabinet measurements

Measure the current sink's outside length and width, then record its bowl depth. The visible rim can hide the cutout, so confirm the opening’s dimensions from below where accessible. An exact measurement may require removing the old sink.

Check the cabinet’s clear interior width against the new sink's minimum cabinet size. Leave room for mounting hardware and any disposal. A deeper bowl can lower the drain enough to complicate the connection to the wall pipe. Check that cabinet braces will clear the bowl.

Countertop openings and mounting styles

A drop-in sink rests on a rim above the counter. An undermount sink attaches below it. Match the replacement’s template to the existing opening, including the corner shapes. Models with similar outside dimensions can require different cutouts.

An undermount opening leaves the countertop edge exposed, making its finish part of the installation. The sink needs support suited to its weight and the countertop material. Changing mounting styles can require countertop work, especially when the existing edge is unfinished.

Countertop work and project scope

An opening that needs enlargement adds cutting and finishing to the job. Stone or engineered-stone counters need an assessment of nearby seams and narrow sections before cutting. Chipped edges or water-damaged material may also need repair.

A smaller replacement sink can leave gaps around the opening. If the existing counter cannot accommodate the new installation, countertop replacement becomes a separate scope decision. That broader project involves measuring adjoining surfaces and planning for backsplash transitions.

Faucet and drain compatibility

Count the faucet and accessory holes, and check whether they sit in the sink deck or countertop. Confirm that the faucet's mounting hardware accommodates the surface thickness. Check handle clearance behind the faucet and the spout’s reach over the bowl.

Check the drain opening and choose a matching flange or strainer before ordering. Changing from two bowls to one can require a new drain arrangement. The sink's drain outlet must leave enough vertical room for the trap to connect properly to the existing wall drain.

Disposal and dishwasher connections

A reused disposal needs a compatible sink flange. Check the clearance below the new bowl before ordering. Its outlet height affects how the trap connects, so check the proposed layout before removal.

Where a dishwasher drains through the disposal, reconnect and secure that hose to the designated inlet. On a new disposal, remove the dishwasher inlet plug before making that connection. Check the hose routing against the appliance instructions and replace damaged connections as needed.

Installation and leak testing

Shut off the water and disconnect power to a disposal before disconnecting the supply lines and drain. Support the old sink during removal to protect the counter. Clean the mounting surface and dry-fit the replacement before applying the specified sealant and installing its mounting hardware.

Follow the sealant's curing directions before use. After reconnecting the faucet and drain, restore the water and check supply joints under pressure. Wipe the connections dry so fresh moisture is easy to spot.

Fill the bowl, then release the water while checking the drain joints underneath. Run the disposal with water where present. Run the dishwasher through a drain cycle and inspect its hose connections while water flows. Check beneath the sink again after these tests.

A Boxwood customer described the team's work:

"Absolute pleasure to work with. Dave and his team exceeded expectations and completed on time-even after I added additional work to their scope. He listens to what you want (and always answers the phone) and works with you to make sure you are happy and satisfied as the project progresses. He doesn't do the job just to get it done. He does the work he can be proud of and stands behind the quality and workmanship."
