Planning a Kitchen Remodel in Central NJ? Here's What to Expect

A kitchen remodel is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming if you don't know what the process looks like. Whether you're updating a few things or doing a complete gut renovation, here's a straightforward guide to what you can expect.

Step 1: Initial Consultation

This is where we walk through your kitchen together. We'll talk about what's working, what's not, and what your goals are. Do you want more counter space? Better lighting? A completely new layout? We'll also discuss budget so we can design a project that makes sense financially.

This visit is free and there's no pressure. It's a conversation, not a sales pitch.

Step 2: Design and Material Selection

Once you decide to move forward, we help you choose cabinets, countertops, flooring, hardware, lighting, and fixtures. If you already know what you want, great. If you need guidance, we'll point you toward options that fit your style and budget.

We'll provide a detailed written estimate that covers everything so there are no surprises.

Step 3: Demolition

Demo day is when things get real. We remove old cabinets, countertops, flooring, and anything else that's being replaced. This is also when we check for any hidden issues like water damage or outdated wiring that needs attention.

We protect the rest of your home with dust barriers and tarps. Kitchen remodels are messy by nature, but we do our best to contain it.

Step 4: The Build

This is the main phase. Depending on the scope of your project, this includes:

  • Electrical and plumbing rough-in (if moving things around)
  • Drywall repair or replacement
  • Cabinet installation
  • Countertop templating and installation
  • Flooring installation
  • Backsplash tile work
  • Lighting, fixtures, and hardware
  • Painting and final trim

Step 5: Final Walkthrough

Before we call the project done, we walk through everything together. We check every detail, make sure everything works, and address anything you want adjusted. We don't consider a job finished until you're happy with it.

How Long Does It Take?

A typical kitchen remodel in Central NJ takes 4-8 weeks depending on the scope. A cosmetic refresh (new counters, backsplash, paint) can be done in 2-3 weeks. A full gut renovation with layout changes takes longer.

The biggest variable is usually material lead times, especially for custom cabinets and specialty countertops. We plan for this upfront so the timeline is realistic.

Tips to Make the Process Smoother

  • Set up a temporary kitchen. A microwave, coffee maker, and toaster oven in another room goes a long way.
  • Make decisions early. Delays usually happen when materials haven't been selected yet.
  • Communicate openly. If something doesn't look right, tell us. It's easier to fix things during construction than after.
  • Plan for the unexpected. Older NJ homes sometimes have surprises behind the walls. A small contingency budget (10-15%) helps.

"We have used Dave and Boxwood Home Construction for several projects. Most recently they did a complete refurbishing of our dated kitchen. They did an outstanding job and we love how our new kitchen looks."
