A kitchen range hood is an exhaust appliance mounted above a cooktop or range. It draws steam, grease, odors, and hot air away from the cooking surface. A ducted model carries that air outdoors through a wall or roof cap.

The hood has a strong visual presence, and its location affects several parts of a remodel. The appliance dimensions establish the centerline. Cabinets frame the opening while the duct needs a clear path through framing. Power, backsplash tile, and the exterior vent all have to meet that same plan.

Hood location

Planning starts with the range or cooktop. Its width and position determine where the hood belongs. The hood manufacturer's instructions set the mounting height and identify which cooking appliances are compatible with the unit.

A hood that sits too far from the cooking surface may struggle to catch rising air. One mounted lower than allowed can interfere with cooking and violate the product clearance. The final height also affects the cabinet above, the view across the room, and the amount of finished backsplash showing below it.

Wall-mounted chimney hoods need open wall space around the flue cover. Under-cabinet hoods fit beneath a cabinet and may send the duct through that cabinet. An over-the-range microwave combines two appliances in one opening. Built-in hood inserts sit inside a decorative wood or metal surround, so the enclosure has to allow service access and follow the insert specifications.

Duct route

A short route with few turns helps exhaust move outdoors. The available path depends on whether the range sits against an exterior wall, on an interior wall, or in an island. Joist direction can determine whether a ceiling route is practical. Plumbing, wires, and heating ducts may occupy the same framing cavities.

Round or rectangular metal duct is common, and every hood lists the connections it accepts. Reducing the duct below the required size can restrict airflow and add noise. Flexible duct can collect grease in its ridges and is a poor fit for this job. The installer should follow the appliance instructions and applicable code for the complete run.

Each elbow adds resistance. A route drawn on a cabinet plan can look simple until the wall or ceiling is opened and the framing becomes visible. Checking the likely path early gives the remodeler time to adjust the hood, cabinet, or termination location before finished work begins.

Outdoor termination

The duct needs a wall cap or roof cap made for kitchen exhaust. A backdraft damper closes when the hood is off and helps limit outdoor air entering the duct. The cap location must stay clear of openings and building features where exhausted air could cause trouble.

The duct must pass fully through the building exterior. Cooking exhaust released into an attic, soffit cavity, garage, or wall cavity can leave moisture and grease on insulation and wood. The opening around the outdoor cap is flashed and sealed for that surface.

Wall caps have to work with siding, masonry, or another exterior finish. Roof caps need proper integration with the roofing. The route should remain accessible enough for future hood service, and the exterior damper should be checked if airflow drops or the hood becomes unusually loud.

Airflow and replacement air

Hood airflow ratings help homeowners compare models. Useful capture also depends on hood width, mounting height, duct resistance, and cooking style. A well-fitted hood on a sound duct route can serve a typical kitchen better than an oversized unit attached to a cramped run.

A powerful exhaust fan removes indoor air quickly. The house has to replace that air from somewhere. Tight homes and homes with fuel-burning equipment deserve careful review because pressure changes can affect comfort and combustion safety. Local requirements and the selected hood may call for a dedicated replacement-air plan.

The hood also needs to be usable. A fan that sounds harsh at the setting used every day may stay turned off. Product sound ratings and the planned duct route offer a better picture before purchase. Remote or inline blower options are available for some systems when the kitchen design calls for them.

Cabinets and finished walls

Cabinet drawings should show the exact hood model and its required opening. The installer can then place blocking where the hood fastens and preserve room for the duct connection. Adjacent doors need enough clearance to open without striking the hood enclosure.

The electrical feed and controls belong on the rough-in plan. Some units plug into a receptacle while others are hardwired. Built-in lights, remote blowers, and controls vary by model. The installation manual should be on site before the wall closes.

Remodel sequence

Select the cooking appliance and hood while the cabinet layout is still being developed. Confirm the mounting rules from both manufacturers. The team can then inspect the duct route, locate the exterior cap, and place electrical service.

Framing and rough mechanical work come before drywall and backsplash tile. Cabinets establish the finished opening, followed by the hood connection and trim. A final test should confirm that the fan runs through its settings, the damper opens, and air reaches the exterior cap.
