5 Signs Your Home Needs New Siding

Your siding is your home's first defense against rain, wind, snow, and sun. In New Jersey, where we get all four seasons plus coastal humidity in parts of Monmouth County, siding takes a beating. Here are five signs that yours might be due for a replacement.

1. Warping, Buckling, or Bubbling

If your siding panels are no longer lying flat against your home, something is wrong underneath. Warping and buckling usually mean moisture has gotten behind the siding and is affecting the underlying structure. Bubbling in vinyl siding often indicates trapped moisture. This isn't just cosmetic. Left alone, this can lead to mold, rot, and structural damage.

2. Fading and Discoloration

Some fading over the years is normal. But if your siding has become noticeably uneven in color, or if one side of your house looks dramatically different from the others, the material is breaking down. Severely faded siding has lost its protective properties and is more vulnerable to moisture and UV damage.

3. Cracks and Holes

Cracked siding is an open invitation for water, insects, and cold air. Even small cracks can let moisture in, which freezes and expands in winter, making the problem worse. If you're seeing cracks in multiple panels, individual repairs won't solve the underlying issue.

4. Rising Energy Bills

Siding plays a bigger role in your home's insulation than most people realize. If your heating or cooling bills have been creeping up without explanation, failing siding could be the culprit. Modern siding with proper house wrap provides a much tighter thermal envelope.

5. Mold, Mildew, or Rot

If you see mold or mildew growing on or near your siding, moisture is getting where it shouldn't be. For wood siding, soft spots or visible rot mean the material has failed. For vinyl, mold on the surface may indicate moisture trapped behind the panels. Either way, it's time to act.

What Should You Do?

If you're seeing one or more of these signs, it's worth having a professional take a look. Sometimes a targeted repair is enough. But if the damage is widespread or your siding is 20+ years old, a full replacement will save you money in the long run by preventing water damage to your home's structure.

New siding also dramatically improves curb appeal. As one of our customers put it:

"Very knowledgeable and easy to work with. They did a great job with my siding, even my neighbors all commented on the new look. Thanks to Boxwood!"
